ChatGPT and Claude take fundamentally different approaches. ChatGPT (GPT-5.5) aims to be your everything AI — it generates images, creates videos, understands voice, browses the web, runs code, and connects to thousands of plugins. Claude (Opus 4.8) focuses on being the best at text-based intelligence — coding, writing, analysis, and reasoning.
Claude Opus 4.8 leads SWE-bench Pro, the gold standard benchmark for real-world software engineering. Claude Code — Anthropic's autonomous coding agent — can independently write, test, debug, and deploy code from your terminal. Claude Sonnet 4.6 offers near-Opus coding quality at dramatically lower cost ($3/$15 per million tokens vs $5/$30 for GPT-5.5).
GPT-5.5 is still a top-3 coding model, and OpenAI's Codex is a strong autonomous coding agent. But for sustained, complex engineering work across large codebases, Claude has the edge.
Claude Sonnet 4.6 scores 1,643 Elo on the GDPval-AA writing benchmark — the highest of any model. Claude is known for nuanced, natural prose that follows complex instructions about tone, voice, and style. GPT-5.5 is rated excellent for creative writing but tends toward a more generic style that many users describe as "ChatGPT-sounding."
This is where ChatGPT dominates. In one subscription you get: DALL·E 3 for images, Sora for video, Whisper for speech-to-text, Voice Mode for conversations, Web Browsing for real-time information, Advanced Data Analysis for running Python, and access to thousands of GPTs and plugins. Claude has none of these multimedia capabilities.
On the Intelligence Index, Claude Opus 4.8 edges GPT-5.5 (61.4 vs 60). Both are neck-and-neck. However, Google's Gemini 3.1 Pro actually leads both on the hardest reasoning benchmarks. For pure logical reasoning, all three are competitive.
Consumer plans: Both offer ~$20/month subscriptions. ChatGPT has a free tier with GPT-5.5 (limited). Claude has a free tier with limited usage.
API pricing: Claude Sonnet 4.6 ($3/$15 per M tokens) is significantly cheaper than GPT-5.5 ($5/$30). Claude Opus 4.8 ($15/$75) is more expensive but delivers the highest benchmark scores.
Use ChatGPT if you want one AI for everything — chat, images, video, voice, browsing. Use Claude if you primarily need coding help, writing assistance, or long document analysis. Use both if budget allows — they complement each other well.
